you can go to microsofts website and update to a leagal copy. or you can buy a disc (i recommend this way as you will allways have the disk if you need to reinstall later)
you should be able to get a copy for under 锟?00.

This shouldn't cost any money at all to fix. How are you updating? The fastest way is not the automatic update but the update on the Start Menu. And if your Internet connection is slow, that'll be slow too.
Do the updates install (maybe tell you to restart) but then not take? Then you'll have to do one of the following. You might have to run your recovery disks or reinstall from your Windows disk but that'll erase everything. That really is the best solution though. One trick with XP is to reinstall the latest service pack (even if your Windows came with that service pack built in. Service pack 2 might write over some of the updates so when you install it, your pc will prolly need more than 80 updates waiting.
