we just pressed F 8 or F 9 during the start up, it will ask if you want to 'wipe' your system clean, and we did. hubbys was asking for the xp disk for months. Got this from the geek squad at bestbuy. if you do this you will completely wipe off pics, files etc..., but its like having a brand new computer.

Sounds like you need a reinstall. A simple reboot won't fix that.
Just boot from your Windows OS CD and follow the prompts.
My guess is he is probably repairing it with a xp disk.
One thing you could try is safe mode see if you can restore it to a previous day before the error.
You can access safe mode by pressing F8 when your system first starts coming up.
boot in safe mode with network support and run scans with trend housecall on the web. and Ccleaner from file hippo
Some system file of your operating system are corrupted. Before reinstall windows if you use it check the following
1. Change your file system of your if it is FAT32 then change it to NTFS
2. Check your ram because the blue screen of death (fatal error) is most probably held due to RAM.
After reinstall a fresh operating system it is required that you use a good antivirus like Avast! it is free for personal use and if you register your self with avast! you can update your viruses database for free and the registration is also free of cost.
Hope this helps you

Dudette...it's a Dell...
Problem #2...
Fatal Error means that the OS has been fatally corrupted. Your computer is now a paper weight.
The CD/DVD being used by the tech is called a Recovery Disk. Most computers sold in the last 10 years come with a Recovery Disk - assuming it didn't come with the actual OS Install disk.
A Recovery Disk can be made by anyone with a computer and CD/DVD Burner... But, your OS needs to be working properly and registerred to do so.
For the Install disk, that comes with some computers, or can be obtained through the OS manufacturer as a replacement (if you grovel long and hard enough), or by going out and buying a new copy of your OS.
Generally speaking, the OS Install Disk is better, because you can not format and re-install using a Recovery Disk. The Recovery Disk simply "repairs" any errors in the OS it finds.
Good Luck!
