well... I would say because you are using a Windows-based product!

Solution: buy a mac! :-)
If it's not any of those answers, then mabye you downloaded some bad software, probably some bootleg software.

And of course he/she is on the internet! How do you think he/she posted this question?
Heres some easy ways to speed up your computer and keep it safe! Check for problems as well to see what's going on with your XP updates with these programs. Virus's generally attack the anti-virus program to remain undetected by your running program. It truly sucks but the checkups will help you with any virus's and spyware.

Run the spyware and virus programs. Download system mechanic for the 30 day trial. You will love it!

Good luck! For the spyware scan and virus protection free try any of these :

I would also download Firefox browser as it appears from what I am reading Internet Explorer is generating many problems with many systems currently.

Watch the bar at the top of the screen. Microsoft will not download anything unless you have the latest Authentication program. The bar at the top will tell you this and allow you to click on it and install it.
Now, the first thing to look for is whether there's some program running that's eating up the bandwidth or blocking the updates.

Some programs like zone alarm would do that, block it, untill you click on allow. A program like imesh or limewire running could well hog all the bandwidth making any other download next to impossible.

A rather simple way of overcoming this problem is to set your "Automatic Updates" option on. This will then do the job at the designated time that you've chosen for it.

Hope this resolves your issue successfully.

Cheers
If you did not purchase a license for the Windows XP, you will not be able to download any updates form Microsoft. Even if you find another place to download them, you will not be able to install them. Microsoft has incorporated active x controls in their software that will detect if you do or do not have a valid copy of their products. The best thing to do is purchase a valid registration and all problems will be solved.
it may be that your os is a pirate copy and microsoft has found out
