Firewall in XP Professional needs to be turned on and only prevents others on the Internet people on other computers from gaining access to yours.
Turn on your Windows XP Pro Firewall setting.
And set the Boot up with a password too so no one can come into your room and boot your computer and gain access without a password.
Make sure you set a password for your computer so you have to enter it at boot, so people can't access your computer when you have are gone and don't want anyone using your personal accounts. Others can get on the computer but without your password they can only log on as Guests.
Set your Screensaver so it comes on in a minute or two and requires your boot up password to get back into your personal desktop settings. That way no one can just sit down at your computer when you leave (unless they come in before the Screensaver starts up that is ) when you're away from the computer in the kitchen getting a sandwich, or something that keeps you away from your computer for awhile. They will need your boot up password to get past the screensaver protection.
Turn off the Guest accounts access unless you are using a Network in your home and share files with other computers.
Other wise leave the Guest Account on, only make sharing with network computers set up so that only known home network or work network computer are allowed to access the folders and files you want to share.
Each folders sharing can be set to allow only the computers on your network.
All and more information I have given you is available in Windows XP Professionals Help. Click on Help and look the information for each and everything I have mentioned. You should be able to be set up and safe in a short time.
If you want a little more secure firewall and virus check out the following links I provide in the Source list.
