boot into safe mode and log on as administrator (not your account...there's a seperate account called administrator resident in xp) by default there is no password for that account so just leave it blank and you'll have admin access. you can reset your user names / passwords / permissions from there.

Pretty simple really but I do wonder how much time people waste reinstalling windows over some silly issue.

try in safe mode
Ouch. Did you make a password reset disk in the User Accounts control panel?

In addition, is another user available that has Administrator rights? Get them to sign in and change your password with them logged on.

If not, I hate to inform you that there is no back door to a forgotten password. You have to reinstall Windows to regain control of your system. When setting up user accounts, you should never use the Administrator account as your only account: it's meant for fixing problems, not for normal use.

There are programs out there that can reset a password, but if something goes wrong, Microsoft tech support can't help you. (Security related tech support from Microsoft is free, by the way, which would be covered by this question: http://support.microsoft.com/securityhom...

P.S.: Safe mode won't cut it. You have to enter a password for Administrator to get in, even with Command Prompt only mode.
your best bet is to use a linux live disk. there are several out there that can help you retrieve your files or even reset your password.

try linux mint. it allows you to access your hard drives info and copy it to a usb flash drive. after you can retrieve your info, then you can reformat and reinstall. if you want to reset your password, which is not at all easy, you can try trinity rescue kit.

Requires a floppy or CD.
i am sorry to tell you that their is nothing you can do... maybe trying to start it up is safe mode with command prompt and transfer all your docs that way but i am not shure
Forget it folks...if this guy is dumb enough to forget his admin password he's too dumb to follow any directions pertaining to file recovery...
